China Passenger Car Sales August 2026: Gas Cars Plunge 40%, EVs Hit Record 65% Share, Exports Surge 78%

China passenger car August 2026 key figures: NEV retail share 65.2% record, 1.54 million retail sales down 23.6%, 888,000 exports up 77.8%
August 2026 in three numbers. Data: CPCA [1].

On September 8, 2026, the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), the retail-data arm of the China Automobile Dealers Association, published its August market analysis [1]. If our last data piece showed China’s factory gate splitting between weak domestic demand and booming exports, the retail view is even starker. Gasoline car sales fell 40% in a single month. Exports rose 78%.

The quick version, all figures from the CPCA release [1] as cross-checked by English-language coverage [2] [3]:

  • Passenger car retail: 1.541 million units, down 23.6% year on year. That’s the 11th straight month of decline [3].
  • NEV share of retail hit a record 65.2%. One in three new cars sold in China is still a gas car. A year ago it was one in two.
  • Gasoline retail collapsed to 540,000 units, −40% [1].
  • Exports reached 888,000 units (+77.8%), 38% of everything Chinese factories sold.
  • January to August retail: 11.716 million units, down 20.8%.

Gas cars are falling off a cliff

Roughly 536,000 gasoline cars were sold to Chinese buyers in August, against 894,000 a year earlier [2]. Pure gas models dropped 45%. Even luxury buyers fled: the segment fell 26% [1]. The only slice of the fuel economy that held up was the conventional hybrid, the Toyota-style car that charges itself, up 10% [1].

Fuel prices did most of the pushing. Gasoline in China has risen by more than 1,720 yuan per ton since January, part of the fallout from the Hormuz Strait crisis, and 95-octane now costs about 8.7 yuan per liter [2]. When a midsize sedan costs more to fill than a comparable EV costs to charge, the buying public stops debating and starts switching.

EVs hit a record share of a shrinking pie

Here’s the number that gets misread. NEV retail penetration of 65.2% is a record [1], but NEV sales themselves fell 10.1%. Battery electrics were the only powertrain that grew at all, up about 2% [2]. The share rises because the denominator, gas cars, is collapsing faster than EVs are contracting.

The retreat isn’t uniform. Small premium EVs and midsize plug-ins held up while cheap city EVs cratered: A00-class micro-electrics fell 51% as subsidy changes hit their price advantage [1]. And the price war that made these cars look irresistible has eaten the industry alive. Margins across Chinese automakers sat at 3.6% in the first seven months of 2026, against 6.5% for China’s industrial average [3]. Beijing responded in September with new guidelines banning destructive discounting, including in export markets [3].

Exports are the pressure valve

888,000 passenger cars left China in August, up 77.8%, equal to 38% of everything Chinese factories sold that month [1]. NEV exports more than doubled to 518,000 units [1]. This is why factory output fell only 4.5% while showrooms emptied: the cars being built are increasingly not for China.

BYD shipped 184,446 NEVs abroad in August, becoming the country’s top NEV exporter [1] [3], and has raised its overseas target for 2026 twice, now to as much as two million units [3]. CPCA Secretary-General Cui Dongshu expects full-year 2026 vehicle exports of around 12 million, rising to 18 to 20 million by 2030 [3]. That’s the whole shape of the industry’s next decade: growth lives outside China.

Who is losing customers to whom

Chinese brands now take 69.9% of domestic retail, up 4.1 points year on year [1]. Joint-venture brands (Volkswagen, Toyota, Honda and their China partners) fell 35% and hold about a fifth of the market. The startups, once punchlines, now own 26% of NEV retail, led by Leapmotor’s 84,874 units [1] [3]. The strongest selling models in August were almost all Chinese: BYD Yuan UP, BYD Song and Geely Xingyuan each wholesaled over 60,000 units [1].

What this means for wheels and parts

Read the export line as an aftermarket forecast. At 888,000 units a month, Chinese brands are adding roughly 10 million vehicles a year to roads outside China, and the top export models are now known by name: BYD Yuan UP, Song and Seagull, Geely Xingyuan, Chery Tiggo 7 and Jaecoo J5, MG4, Jetour Traveller, Deepal S05 [1]. Every one of them will need replacement wheels, tires and bolt-on parts in a few years, in markets where almost nobody stocks them yet. Our breakdown of the May factory data pointed the same direction from the production side.

September outlook

September is China’s traditional buying season and retail should improve month on month [1]. The year-on-year number will stay ugly because last September set an all-time record as buyers rushed the final wave of trade-in subsidies. CPCA’s own forecast index for August sat at a historic bottom of 12%, with an expected recovery in autumn as new subsidy rounds land [1].

FAQ

How many passenger cars did China sell in August 2026?

1.541 million at retail, down 23.6% year on year and down for an 11th consecutive month, per the CPCA [1] [3].

What share of cars sold in China are electric or plug-in?

65.2% of new passenger car retail in August 2026, the highest monthly share ever recorded. Battery electrics alone were about 45% of the market [1] [2].

Are Chinese car exports still growing?

Yes, and accelerating. Passenger car exports rose 77.8% year on year in August to 888,000 units, with NEV exports up 154.7%. The CPCA’s chief expects about 12 million vehicle exports for 2026 [1] [3].

Why did gasoline car sales collapse in China?

Fuel prices: gasoline rose over 1,720 yuan per ton in 2026 amid Hormuz Strait disruption, making EV ownership dramatically cheaper to run. The shift is structural, not seasonal [1] [2].
